Kanchipuram Silk Guilds
For over four centuries, the master weaver families of Kanchipuram have translated Dravidian temple architecture into warp and weft. Using heavyweight mulberry silk twisted with pure silver-gilt zari, two artisans sit side-by-side operating three shuttles to interlock contrasting borders into the body through the ancient, labor-intensive Korvai joint.
Srikalahasti Kalamkari Masters
Along the banks of the sacred Swarnamukhi River, artisans work with bamboo reed pens (kalam) wrapped in pure sheep wool. Each motif is drawn freehand without stencils or blocks, using natural botanical dyes derived from madder root, pomegranate rind, and fermented iron jaggery rust, followed by natural mineral river washing.
Chippa Hand-Block Printers of Bagru
In the arid soil of Bagru, the Chippa community has inherited the art of wooden block carving and mud-resist printing for over 300 years. Carved seasoned teakwood blocks are dipped in Dabu mud paste and pressed onto unbleached cotton before plunging into deep underground indigo fermentation vats.
Pochampally Ikat Weavers
Known as the "Silk City of India", Bhoodan Pochampally is renowned for the mathematical genius of double ikat. The warp and weft silk yarns are bundled, plotted with precision geometric alignments, and tie-dyed multiple times before being woven on pit looms where the design emerges organically on the reed.
